Finding a use for faster broadband

I recently upgraded from a 1MB Streamyx line to a 10MB UniFi line and it got me thinking.

You know how in the old days (that's only maybe 5-6 years ago in computer terms) people would say that they wouldn't know what to do with 1TB hard drives and that 250GB was more than enough.

Even further back, Bill Gates said the same thing about RAM, saying that 640K was enough for anybody.

Such predictions always end up looking a little silly after a few years.

The problem is that statements like that are based on the assumption that the way people use computers never changes.

The reality is that no matter how large your hard drive is, how much RAM you have and how fast your Internet speed is, something always comes along that will fill that extra hard drive capacity, extra bandwidth or extra CPU/GPU power.

It's the same with the Internet - while I felt that a 56Kbps dial-up connection was blazingly fast in a time when the Internet was mostly text and pictures, and that 1Mbps was similarly fast when YouTube was only in standard definition - now that everything is in high definition, only my 10Mbps fibre connection will do.

My point is this - if you're holding back on getting high-speed broadband (not necessarily from TM) because you think your current speed is fast enough, think again - you'll definitely appreciate it once you get it.

I know I did, and I definitely can't go back. - TAN KIT HOONG
