KUALA LUMPUR: Data and broadband service provider REDtone Telecommunications and applied-research agency Mimos have signed a memorandum of understanding.
The agreement will see REDtone receiving usage rights for Mimos' WiWi and Intelligence Surveillance Platform (ISP) products for three years.
WiWi is an outdoor WiFi access point which offers extended coverage for wireless broadband services and consequently allows new services like wireless IPTV, video surveillance services and localised advertising.
Mimos' ISP product, on the other hand, is a security monitoring system that acquires video feeds and uses high-level video analytics to alert users to suspicious events.
According to Datuk Wei Chuan Beng, managing director of REDtone International Bhd, the WiWi access points will help REDtone widen coverage to rural areas in line with the "kampung tanpa wayar" (wireless villages) initiative, in addition to urban areas, including shopping malls.
By the end of the year, REDtone intends to implement about 4,500 such hotspots nationwide.
Wei said REDtone is also eyeing a slice of the international market and is looking into providing its services in Myanmar. - TAN KIT HOONG
