Digital-based IP surveillance technology is reliable, inexpensive, easy to install and fast replacing analogue-based systems according to Axis Communications.

Other advantages include remote access to the video feed, scalability and, more importantly, the ability to capture higher resolution images that would allow owners to clearly identify intruders, shoplifters and other incidents, said Nafis Jasmani, its country manager for Malaysia and Brunei.

To make it easier to deploy such a system, the company has launched the Camera Companion kit for home, retail stores, offices and hotels. The system is designed to work with up to 16 cameras.

It consists of several parts: Axis network cameras or video encoders; client software and iOS and Android apps; and standard network equipment like routers, switches and NAS (network-attached storage) devices.

Unlike analogue equipment, Axis cameras do not require a central recording device like a digital video recorder or even a computer to work.

All images are recorded onto a standard SD memory card and the recording will continue even if there are network connection issues.

Also, the cameras are powered over the network, eliminating the need for separate power cables.

For customers who want to keep their current analogue camera installations, integration with their existing setup is also possible by using video encoders. This device converts analogue signals to digital and saves them onto an SD card.

The live video feed can also be streamed and recorded on a PC, smartphone and tablet from anywhere with the right apps installed.

Prices for the cameras start from US$200 (RM600).
